The flies, on the other hand, were put together with a non-waterproof glue. After three casts I was fishing with a naked hook.

Review by anthony for Crystal River Fly Fishing Combo Kit Rating: Although this is the cheapest combo you can find. the reel is plastic and does not work as you would expect at the bare minimum. The tension settings are just plain poor and not adjustable beyond the weight of a nail.

You may want to consider something else but you will definitely want to purchase a different reel if you buy this, so you basically bought a rod and fly fishing line since the reel is useless.

If I knew the reel was one step up from a toy, I would of purchased the martin fly rod and reel combo. Its more money but will last for years and the reel is quite good and sturdy.
I would pass on crystal river if I was you.
By the way, I bought two crystal river kits and both reels were poorly made and operational so it wasnt just the one kit that was poorly made, it was both.

You will outgrow it in a couple of weeks though. Can't beat the price, but you do indeed get what you pay for. The reel is plastic, and I broke it when I...um...fell into the river. It does not come with backing, which is fine for beginners.

Review by Dermo for Crystal River Fly Fishing Combo Kit Rating: Great value.You get a good ,light, action rod .A perfectly functioning (plastic) reel,2 wet flies,fly-line and a leader. Ideal for learner/beginner or in my case an old veteran fisherman. You can easily replace the reel with a better model should you wish later. The rod has a nice even action and I was surprised at how good it reacted. Make sure to buy your own Flies before using it(As all flies are local and seasonal). I would recommend this .

I am a 70 year old grandmother, who at 65 took up fly fishing and I feel I need the very best to learn with at this time in my life. This reel is the very best. I feel we should buy the very best we can afford and I did and I am so glad. Cannot say enough about this reel.
